Responding to concerns from head teachers that school league tables in England unfairly stigmatise schools in white working class areas, Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson David Ward said:
“Isn’t it about time that the Tories listen to teachers? Liberal Democrats have. We would do away with the school ranking system and a teach-to-test culture that has done nothing but be divisive for our society."
“I am deeply concerned about what has been said today, particularly given white and Bangladeshi working-class boys in Bradford have some of the lowest rates of entry to university. School should be a place where barriers are broken down and skills are developed so everyone can get ahead in life."
"What happens to a child before they get to school can shape the educational outcomes for a child from a deprived background. That is why Liberal Democrats have also made a commitment to protect pupil spending (additional money for children from deprived backgrounds introduced by the Liberal Democrats in Government) in real terms and increase the early years pupil premium to £1000.”
