"Right" plan is not enough in the face of historic downturn

Responding to today's coronavirus update from the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Acting Leader of the Liberal Democrats Ed Davey said:

"Our economy is falling off a cliff, but it seems the Chancellor has no more help to offer.

"Facing the possibility of an economic downturn of historic proportions, the Chancellor needed to be absolutely clear about planning for additional interventions to protect jobs and livelihoods as the crisis evolves. Instead the Chancellor fell back on rhetoric about having the "right" plan.

"It’s clear that too many people have been left out by the Chancellor’s plans to date - from people who were changing jobs in February and March to many self-employed people and to large numbers of businesses who can’t get the loans the Chancellor promised.

"People needed to hear about additional support in the pipeline not that the Chancellor’s existing plan was "right". It’s just not enough."
