Commenting on ONS statistics showing that, in August, the Government borrowed £35.9 billion – the highest amount for August since 1993 – and that national debt exceeded £2 trillion for the first time, Liberal Democrat Economy Spokesperson Christine Jardine said:
“The coronavirus pandemic is a crisis unlike any other that we’ve experienced – and that’s exactly why it requires an unprecedented economic response.
“Pushing through this difficult period and building a better, greener economy after the pandemic is the right way to deal with the public finances. What we need is a Green Recovery Plan to create jobs, tackle the climate emergency and create the growth we need to manage the debt burden.
“Instead the Chancellor’s plans do nothing for the excluded, who have had no financial support for six months, and risk mass redundancies. Ministers must put people before numbers and ensure that no-one is be left behind.”
