Responding to data from the Office for National Statistics revealing there were some 2,000 coronavirus related care home deaths in the week ending 17 April, Liberal Democrat Health, Wellbeing and Social Care spokesperson Munira Wilson said:
"People will be deeply concerned to hear of the terrible toll coronavirus is taking outside of hospitals. The time lag for the release of figures for deaths in the community means we remain a long way off understanding the true impact of this cruel virus in real-time, and may lead many to underestimate the scale of the crisis.
"The Government must do everything in its power to ensure information about every coronavirus related death is included in data at daily press conferences.
"Full transparency of real-time data will enable the Government to ensure the right actions are being taken to tackle the impact of the virus on the most vulnerable – whether they be in residential care homes or receiving care in their own homes. Top of that list of actions must be providing adequate and appropriate personal protective equipment, as well as regular and accessible testing.”
