Govt must invest in essential youth services amidst COVID-19 crisis

Responding to a National Youth Agency report showing the needs of one million young people have been amplified by the pandemic, and an estimated two million have emerging needs triggered by the COVID-19 crisis, Lib Dem education spokesperson Layla Moran said:

“The National Youth Agency’s report shows that the crisis facing young people in this pandemic is both large and complex. It's clear that our youth services are vital and, so far, they’ve essentially been ignored in the Government’s response.

“I absolutely agree with the report that youth work must be classified as an essential key service. The Government must make the most use of the vital resource that is our youth workers and volunteers - they can help us to reach beyond schools to identify and help vulnerable young people.

“The Liberal Democrats are calling on the Government to invest in youth services essential to safeguarding the mental health of our young people during this pandemic. We need to work with young people themselves and have a strategy for reopening our youth services as a priority.”
