Responding to the Business Secretary's press conference on the Government's strategy for dealing with the Coronavirus, Acting Leader of the Liberal Democrats Ed Davey said:
On Business Interruption Loans
“At a time when the whole country is coming together to fight Covid-19 it is becoming increasingly clear that the Government cannot just leave the big banks to deliver the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loans. The big banks are simply not rising to the challenge.
“Too many small businesses report long delays, high interest terms and being asked for personal guarantees. At a time of national crisis this picture is unacceptable.
“Having given the banks unprecedented support just a decade ago, the British taxpayer now demands far better. Ultimately it is the Government's responsibility to ensure banks play ball."
On testing and PPE
"Today's press conference revealed painfully slow progress in terms of testing and provision of PPE. Both of these are vital in supporting NHS staff who are risking their health to treat people who are gravely ill with Coronavirus.
"The Liberal Democrats continue to support many of the actions taken by Government but Cabinet Ministers must be completely transparent about why testing and protection equipment are proving so illusive, whilst cases of Coronavirus continue to increase. We must see clearly that they are taking every possible step to put this right."
