Transparency needed on Covid-19 related deaths outside of hospitals

Responding to figures from the ONS suggesting that the coronavirus death toll in the UK may be 15% higher than daily NHS figures indicate, due to deaths outside of hospitals, Liberal Democrat Health, Wellbeing and Social Care spokesperson Munira Wilson said:

"The devastating figures published today provide a much clearer picture of the impact of Covid-19 beyond hospitals. As we feared, people dying in care make up a significant proportion of Covid-19 related deaths.

"The Department for Health and Social Care must clarify why they are not publishing deaths in the community, alongside their daily hospital figures. They must also be clear on whether they will increase provisions for personal protective equipment and testing for the care sector to protect residents and staff from the outbreak.

"Transparency is crucial in this fight and knowing the true figure is essential so all sectors involved in fighting this can make informed and effective decisions."
